Canberra Metro gets Rail Ready

Promoting public safety ahead of operations

With the first stage of Canberra’s Light Rail fast approaching the start of operations in early 2019, the project has launched an important Rail Ready public safety education campaign.

The Rail Ready safety awareness program is engaging the community ahead of electrification of overhead wires and on track testing of the light rail vehicles (LRV) and electrical system.

It’s time to think about safety. Are you Rail Ready Canberra?

The Rail Ready program provides safety tips for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers when in the light rail environment.

Canberra’s Light Rail is part of an integrated public transport system that will expand the options for people to move around Canberra. Light rail safety awareness among children and adults is essential, and the Rail Ready program is helping the community to stay safe and be aware of the changes around them.

Canberra Metro is proactively engaging the community and distributing light rail safety resources including a video, brochures and posters for download which are available at www.canberra-metro.com.au/safety.

Stage one fleet of 14 LRVs

Stage One of Canberra’s Light Rail, being delivered under a public private partnership (PPP), consists of a 12km track from the city to Gungahlin with 13 stops including a terminus at each end of the route.

Canberra's fleet will be made up of 14 CAF Urbos light rail vehicles.

Public private partnership

Canberra’s Light Rail PPP for Stage One is between the ACT Government and the Canberra Metro consortium which includes CIMIC Group companies Pacific Partnerships (equity funding), CPB Contractors (design and construction) and UGL (operations and maintenance).

The PPP is for approximately 23 years and includes the construction and operation of Stage One of the light rail network for 20 years. At the end of the contract term, the ACT Government will assume ownership of the light rail network assets.
