Train testing at Sydney Metro Northwest

Safety first for Stage 1 of Australia’s largest public transport project

Sydney has had its first look at the city’s new metro train in action, during testing at the Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill.

Key milestone for Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) Public Private Partnership (PPP)

Train testing is a key milestone for the OTS PPP which includes CIMIC Group companies Pacific Partnerships, CPB Contractors and UGL, supported by EIC Activities.

Safety is the project’s number one priority and the current train testing is being done in close consultation with the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator.

Each 132 metre train weighs about 240 tonnes and is made from stainless steel and carbon steel.

Train testing focuses on systems like brake functions, passenger information displays, lighting and door operation, as well as acceleration, braking and operation at different speeds.

$3.7B OTS PPP awarded in 2014

Pacific Partnerships (equity investor), CPB Contractors (design and construction) and UGL are part of a consortium delivering the $3.7 billion Sydney Metro Northwest’s OTS PPP, awarded in 2014.

OTS PPP scope

The OTS PPP is delivering eight new metro stations, five existing stations upgraded to metro standards, 23km of new track, 4,000 commuter parking spaces and Sydney’s new generation of fully automated metro trains.

Sydney Metro Northwest services will commence in the first half of 2019 when customers will have a train every four minutes in the peak in each direction between Rouse Hill and Chatswood.
